Your
Child's First Days and Our 3-day Policy
At IPC we understand how scary and uncomfortable the first few days of pre-school can be for both the child and the parents. To enable your child to adjust easily on their first few days of school we have implemented a 3-day policy. Our policy is as follows: 1.) On the first day you the parents can accompany your child to school and stay for a while (or the whole morning), in the classroom in order to settle and reassure your child. 2.) On the second day you may accompany your child to the classroom and spend an appropriate period of time with him or her. When the teacher feels the time is right, say a cheerful goodbye and leave the classroom, reassuring your child that you will be back after school. You have the option of remaining on the school premises, but you should be out of sight of your child. Our teachers are experienced at calming children who may become upset at the first separation from their parents. However, should the teacher find that she needs your help in calming your child, they will then seek you out. 3.) On the third day, in order for your child to developed a relationship with the teacher and the other children in class, you settle you child and leave the premises. Try not to be too tense and gently but firmly explain to your child that you will be back. A small child's concept of time is almost non-existent and a three hour morning may seem like a very long time, so please pick up your child on time at the end of the school day. The child will now have a measure of confidence and independence and will be able to integrate in to the normal class routine after the 3 day period. There are times, however, when the teacher may feel that a certain child is not ready to separate from his or her parents. In such a case, the teacher will discuss the situation with the parent. Sometimes the child will remain at home for another month or so before trying again. We have enjoyed great success on the second try in such cases. It is vital that the pre-school experience should not be distressing to a young child and we hope for your co-operation in such instances. Talking about school in the
morning and going over the positive experiences of your child's day at
school, plus the constant reassurance from at of us at IPC, will help
your child quickly settle in and enjoy the time spent with us. |
