COOKING CLASS

Our program is designed to provide developmentally appropriate activities for each child.

This means that we understand that young children learn best in an active environment that is planned to match their level of development.

If you visit our cooking class you will find the kindergarten classes active in each step from measuring ingredients to pouring and mixing whilst the nursery classes will help count the measuring cups and choose colors and or describe the textures and smells etc.

While most of our lessons are edible, we also experiment in the kitchen with science lessons.

The cooking curriculum offers our students opportunities to:

· Practice math and reading skills in an exciting way.
· Learn science concepts as they discover physical and chemical changes that occur during cooking.
· Work cooperatively in small groups.
· Develop good work habits as they carefully follow directions in sequential order.
· Build self- confidence as they successfully prepare the recipes
· Make the recipe at home to share with family and friends.

· Learn about healthy foods and enjoy them.

Here are some examples of the exciting recipes we have tried:

Purple Cows
We used a blender to combine MILK, BANANAS and GRAPE JUICE to make a delicious friut shake.

Friendship Fruit Salad
The other children were able to select and peel/cut fruit while the younger children helped select the different color fruits to make their individual fruit salad.

Mud
We first made chocolate instant pudding (our version of mud) then crushed biscuits with our hands and rolling pins (our dirt). Combined the two into cups and dug holes for our seeds (sprinkles).

Soap Crayons
We took soap flakes and mixed it with water and food colouring. Once combined, we placed the mixture into ice cube trays until they hardened. Then we get to take them home and draw beautiful pictures in the bathtub for Mummy and Daddy.

Monster/Rainbow Toast
This was a huge hit with all the children so we have included the recipe below- ENJOY! (with parental guidance)

Ingredients
milk (about 1/8- 1/4 cup for each color)
food coloring
bread
butter
sugar
paint brush for kitchen use only!

Prepare 'Paint'
1. Pour milk in a bowl
2. Add a few drops of food coloring until desired color. Repeat for as many colors desired.

To make the toast
1. Let the children use the 'paint' to make you a beautiful picture. Both sides of the bread can be used.
2. Place the painted bread into the toaster. This brings out the colors.
3. Add butter, sugar and eat!!!
